I literally have this discussion multiple times per week with patients. I’d love to say that it got better with covid and more people working from home, but I actually think it got worse! It’s so easy to let boundaries slip at home with work time taking over more of what should be your “away from work time.” I get that things are busy and there are often a million and a half things to do and you’re likely doing the job of more than one person… But taking a lunch break is SO key. I have so many patients who only drink coffee for breakfast (are you one of them?). It provides a caffeine boost and a pick me up. It may give you a sugar hit if you add anything to your coffee…but the caffeine and sugar can only keep you going for so long! Lunch provides a mid-day replenishment of nutrients for your body AND should be a break where you physically make time to both rest and digest. We don’t want you stuck in the sympathetic, go-go-go mode all day long WITHOUT the support of some added energy. It’s also important to ensure that you aren’t just eating carbs or sugary things with lunch-Having some fat and protein in your meal will help to balance your blood sugar levels, really boost your energy and make sure that you aren’t getting the post-lunch crash from eating too many carbs/sugars. Are you ACTUALLY taking a lunch break and giving yourself some time to rest, relax, eat AND digest so you can get through the rest of your day?! Email me back and let me know if you struggle with this! |
