So far this year, we’ve bought the following in bulk:
· Apricots
· Beets

Seasonality, Local Food and Nutrients
Sure you can technically get strawberries in January, but they tend to be flavorless and sort of awful. This is because they’ve had to come from such a long distance—they’ve been picked long ahead of ACTUALLY being ripe so that they don’t spoil in transport, or while they’re sitting on the shelf and are good once you get them home. This really limits not only the flavor, but the nutrients that they’re able to uptake while they’re growing when they’re picked so early.
This is also a huge reason to buy as LOCALLY as you’re able to, and to buy things when they’re at the peak of their season. This way they can be as ripe and contain as many nutrients as possible.
Local is always the way to go if you’re able to because it helps limit the transportation of foods! It’s so much better to get something that’s from a max of a few hundred kilometers away compared to halfway across the world!
Price Discounts
The other fantastic thing about buying in bulk is that you often get a discount when you’re buying in a large amount! We’ve saved so much money by buying in bulk. It does mean you often have to do something with it once you get it, but that’s worth it too.
Food Preserving- A New Hobby
Now this may be a bit of a hard sell for some, but I LOVE utilizing different methods to preserve all the fantastic fresh, local organic food we can buy and grow! I dehydrate, water-bath can, pressure can, freeze and ferment foods to store so that we still have access to the delicious foods all winter and spring long. It’s definitely something that gets addictive once you get into it, because you get such fantastic results from it! These are all things I teach in my Food as Medicine Membership, so it’s definitely something to consider joining once we open the doors again next year!
